Gliese Magic Air Purifier Review: Gliese Magic Air Purifier is one of the latest portable air purifiers in the market. We have got our hands on the air purifier and here’s what on offer

Design: Gliese Magic air purifier is a true compact device with just less than 14 inches tall and 9 inches wide, it weighs  1.8 kg’s making it really handy to carry around the place. However, the quality of plastic used in construction of the device feels really cheap. Given the price point of Rs. 7,500, you get what you pay for and it is not fair to expect ABS plastic or high grade material body construction. The air purifier is equipped with a simple control panel to operate the device, the function icons are well laid out and easy to read. I like the separate buttons for Ions and UV lamp, I would keep the Ionizer off as it is proven to be harmful for allergic or asthma prone people.

The 3-step light indicators clearly show air quality level: Blue- good; Amber – moderate; Purple – polluted and Red-bad.

Technology: Gliese Magic air purifier is equipped with an unique 5 stage air purification technology.

Stage 1 – Pre-filter traps larger dust particles and other air pollutants in order to protect the HEPA filter from dirt and ensures longer life. Pre-filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 4 months.

Stage 2 – HEPA filter traps all kinds of viruses, bacteria, dust particles, pollen etc.

Stage 3 – Carbon filter absorbs bad odor or any smelly gases.

Stage 4 – UV filter

Stage 5 – Ionizer emits negatively charged ions that neutralizes the positively charged ions from TV’s or other electronic devices.

We do not recommend ionizing devices if you are prone to allergens or asthma, ion emitting devices are harmful and most premium air purifiers are not equipped with ionizers. UV and Ionizers are not turned on automatically once the device is powered on.

Gliese Magic is equipped with HEPA air filter, the mystery word HEPA which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. Glass fibers are used to make HEPA filters and their unique configuration makes sure that large contaminants such as mold, dust and allergens are captured. HEPA filters can collect 99.9% of airborne impurities that are larger than 0.3 microns diameter. It is important to know that HEPA filters do not deal with nasty smells or odors.  The pre filter helps to filter larger airborne impurities, the carbon filter to remove odors or gases and the HEPA to remove PM2.5 (Particles less than or equal to 10 micrometers in diameter, in simple terms, these are particles less than the width of human hair)

Performance: Gliese Magic air purifier  test results are good with numbers of 140 m3/h for cigarette smoke, the applicable area for the air purifier is impressively over 40 m2, which is on par when compared to other premium air purifiers. The device also holds impressive test results of over 99% on purifying PM2.5 articles. In the quiet mode, the unit is silent at sound levels of 26dB, however, it gets a little noisy over 55 dB at higher fan speeds. The air purifier is recommended for small rooms only.

Customers have noticed inconsistent operation of the device is different cities, this is not at fault with the air purifier but due to climatic conditions. Weather in Mumbai is humid when compared to Delhi, humid weather causes moisture on the sensors making it inconsistent by indicating poor air quality even though the air quality is actually good. Constant cleaning of moisture with a dry cloth is required for the device to show accurate results.

The filtration system consists of a pre filter that can capture big particles, an active carbon filter that can remove bad odors or harmful gases and the powerful HEPA filter can effectively remove PM2.5 particles (less than the width of human air).

Maintenance: Gliese recommends changing the filter once in a year, this may not hold true all the time as the filter life depends on the air quality. Gliese Magic air filter is priced at Rs. 2,199.00 and is available on at Rs. 1,990.00. The air purifier filter surface is recommended to be cleaned biweekly with a dry cloth only.

Conclusion: Gliese Magic is a well packed all round air purifier with good features, specifications and is offered at an aggressive price point. Gliese Magic has an impressive coverage area and does its job withcheck-price-on-amazon-button its bells and whistles,  however, there are a few factors that could get you second thoughts, like cheap build quality, inconsistent air quality sensor, noise levels at high fan speeds etc. , these may not be a deal breaker for the majority looking for an air purifier at this price range (below Rs. 8,000). If you can stretch your budget further, I would highly recommend Philips AC1215, the entry HEPA air purifier from Philips available on Amazon from Rs. 9,450.00.
